No Phones at Bedtime

Not your parent, but using you phone at bedtime could be causing you more trouble than you think. Research shows that phone use before bed keeps us awake, reduces our sleep quality, and disrupts our natural sleep cycle.

A recent report from the New York Post highlights research showing that every 30 minutes of smartphone use after 10 p.m. was associated with teenagers going to bed 26 minutes later and losing nearly 13 minutes of sleep.

Bright screens, never-ending activity and constant notifications are making it hard for teens to wind down and sleep at night.

Teens need 9-10 hours of sleep for healthy growth, emotional wellness and academic performance. Even having a phone in the same room we’re sleeping in interrupts our sleep.

What can you do?

Rethink your nighttime routine.

How can you create some space from your phone? How about your laptop or tablet, too?

Set a time to power down and stick to it.

Replace screen time with calming activities like listening to soothing music, reading, journaling, doodling, or mindfulness exercises.

Charge your devices outside of the bedroom.

It might take some time and getting used to, but your body and mind will be grateful.

Plan to get better sleep tonight!
